MIT’s App Inventor team, through partnership with the Congressional App Challenge Coalition, recently offered a special hour-long webinar for middle and high schools students (and their mentors) to learn how to design, build, and submit an Android app. The live webinar was recorded using Hangouts on Air and is now available for viewing.
The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and ITU Child Online Protection Champion, Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan celebrates the winning team of the just concluded Technovation Challenge in Nigeria. She applauded the feat of these young girls who developed a mobile app to track traffic offenders in Nigeria. The team were also presented to the European parliament(www.witin.org/tc13) on 25th of April by the Secretary General of ITU, Dr Hamadoun I. Touré; who also presented them with the Tech Needs Girls Awards.
A team of eighth-graders at a New Hampshire middle school created a smartphone app that could make navigating the cafeteria a whole lot easier. The Hampstead Academy students took home the grand prize at Verizon’s App Challenge with their idea for “Chow Checker,” an app that identifies food allergens.
In preparation for the first Hour of Code TM we developed new tutorials in the form of short, user-friendly videos that anyone can follow to build their first mobile apps. The Hour of Code is nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming. I recently teamed up with CS teacher Kristin Violette to write an article for the July issue of CSTA Voice. In the article we chronicle how Kristin's students at Newtown High School in Connecticut have used App Inventor to forge a personalized connection between CS and their local community. The gallery is an open-source app store, a collaborative development environment, and a peer-to-peer learning studio, all in one. Teachers, students, and app developers: make the gallery part of your app inventing!
The 2012 App Inventor Contest had 125 submissions in four categories: K-8, High School, College/University, and Open. Google Nexus 7 Tablets are awarded to the 1st place winners, with App Inventor books given for second place.
